Bread of various kinds is part of the diet of many families with children. You can start serving bread to babies from 6 months, but keep in mind that certain types of bread can easily clump in the mouth. Here are my best tips on what to consider when choosing and serving bread to babies and children.
Bread has gotten a bit of a bad reputation nutritionally, but there are so many different types of bread to buy and bake that it really isn't that black and white. Bread can be a very good source of fiber and other nutrients for young children.
Serving bread based on the age of the baby/child
-6-9 months
Long piece of bread (approx. 2x6 cm) or a piece of bread to nibble on.
-9-12 months
From when the baby has developed a tweezers grip. Mouth pieces, approx. 1x1 cm.
-about 12 months +
Whole or half a slice of bread. Some children can only do this at 18 months.
General tips
- Toast the bread for babies
- Resistance in the bread
It's best to choose a bread with a little more resistance for babies and small children, rather than a very soft bread that clumps more easily in the mouth.
- Whole grains are good for children
Whole grain bread is usually preferable for children as these types of bread contain more nutrients and contribute to a better feeling of satiety.
- Sourdough helps absorb iron
Sourdough in the bread is good as it helps the body absorb the iron in the bread.
Tips on good store-bought bread for babies and children
Check the ingredients list and try to choose a bread with whole wheat flour, low sugar content and high fiber content. The keyhole label is also a good guide.
